Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease. In fact, periodontal disease is often noted as the sixth complication of diabetes. This is because diabetics are more likely to contract infections. Patients who are not managing their diabetes well are at an increased risk.
Periodontal disease can make it difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar. Severe cases of periodontal disease can raise blood sugar, which in turn can increase the occurrence of diabetic complications.
Research indicates that treating the periodontal infection can improve the management of diabetes.
