Research indicates that genetics play a role in the development and severity of periodontal disease. However, the likelihood of one developing the disease is a combination of both genetics and environmental factors. Moreover, there are a number of genes that can make one susceptible to gum disease and the genes may vary based on race and ethnicity. Recognizing those susceptible to gum disease with a genetic test before they show signs of the disease and initiating treatment early could help preserve their teeth for life.
