Researchers have discovered that when bacteria from the oral cavity are inhaled into the lungs, pneumonia or other respiratory diseases can develop; especially in patients with advanced periodontitis.
A high level of bacteria is present in the mouth of persons with gum disease, making them more susceptible to lung illnesses or breathing problems, such as emphysema or asthma.
Research suggests that during the inhalation process bacteria can cause patients with breathing problems to experience frequent periods of infections and make allergies worse. Adequate tooth cleanings, mouth rinses and proper oral care at home can decrease the complication of chronic breathing conditions.
